Updated: Library Evacuated Tuesday; Smell of Gas Detected

Building was closed earlier this year.

Updated: Wednesday, 1:15 p.m.

The Lovett library branch was evacuated Tuesday because there was a smell of gas in the building.

Librarians began talking about the smell shortly after 3 p.m. At about 3:45 p.m., a security official asked everyone inside the library to leave. He didn't say why.

The building, however, was closed as a precaution.

The library was closed from November 2010 through January 2011 due to heating issues. Officials said the library would likely need to be closed for an even longer period of time in the future for even more major renovations.

Lovett was opened, as usual, at 1 p.m. Wednesday, however. Librarians there said gas likely spilled in the utility room Tuesday but said it wasn't dangerous and said no natural gas was detected..
