City Council Votes to Pass Modified Sick Days Bill

Mayor Nutter must sign it into law.

City Council voted today to pass a bill that will require businesses that contract with or receive subsidies from the city to provide their workers with up to seven paid sick days a year.

The bill, which was modified from its original version to make it less universal, passed 15-2 but isn't yet law. It must be signed by Mayor Michael Nutter, who has vetoed the legislation in the past, saying it would be bad for business and bad for the city as it faces uncertain economic times.

There have been rallies in Mt. Airy organized in support of the bill. You can read about them here. Others have criticized the measure.

"The health and livelihoods of all Philadelphians are compromised when working people are forced to go to their jobs when they're sick," said Marianne Bellesorte, the senior director of policy at PathWays PA, in a news release. "City Council took an important step today by ensuring that city tax dollars only fund jobs that support public health, families, and the community."

The bill was introduced by Councilman W. Wilson Goode Jr.

I am sick of hearing government should stay out of business. This actually helps people!
People should pay more attention to local government than national government becasue they are actually getting stuff done. Glad to hear something good come out of government.

This compromise legislation is much better than the original bill. Business owners now have the option to not take City money or enter into leases with the City if they don't want or can't comply with providing sick pay to their employees. I agree with Grechen's previous comment that local government is where it is at!
